Quantum repeaters based on heralded qubit amplifiers
We present a quantum repeater scheme based on the recently proposed qubit
amplifier [N. Gisin, S. Pironio and N. Sangouard, Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 070501
(2010)]. It relies on a on-demand entangled-photon pair source which uses
on-demand single-photon sources, linear optical elements and atomic ensembles.
Interestingly, the imperfections affecting the states created from this source,
caused e.g. by detectors with non-unit efficiencies, are systematically
purified from an entanglement swapping operation based on a two-photon
detection. This allows the distribution of entanglement over very long
distances with a high fidelity, i.e. without vacuum components and multiphoton
errors. Therefore, the resulting quantum repeater architecture does not
necessitate final postselections and thus achieves high entanglement
distribution rates. This also provides unique opportunities for
device-independent quantum key distribution over long distances with linear
optics and atomic ensembles.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
Non-perturbative renormalization group for the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation
We present a simple approximation of the non-perturbative renormalization
group designed for the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation and show that it yields the
correct phase diagram, including the strong-coupling phase with reasonable
scaling exponent values in physical dimensions. We find indications of a
possible qualitative change of behavior around . We discuss how our

Exciting Andreev pairs in a superconducting atomic contact
The Josephson effect describes the flow of supercurrent in a weak link, such
as a tunnel junction, nanowire, or molecule, between two superconductors. It is
the basis for a variety of circuits and devices, with applications ranging from
medicine to quantum information. Currently, experiments using Josephson
circuits that behave like artificial atoms are revolutionizing the way we probe
and exploit the laws of quantum physics. Microscopically, the supercurrent is
carried by Andreev pair states, which are localized at the weak link. These
states come in doublets and have energies inside the superconducting gap.
Existing Josephson circuits are based on properties of just the ground state of
each doublet and so far the excited states have not been directly detected.
Here we establish their existence through spectroscopic measurements of
superconducting atomic contacts. The spectra, which depend on the atomic
configuration and on the phase difference between the superconductors, are in
complete agreement with theory. Andreev doublets could be exploited to encode
information in novel types of superconducting qubits.Comment: Submitted to Natur
Effects of photoperiod extension on clock gene and neuropeptide RNA expression in the SCN of the Soay sheep
In mammals, changing daylength (photoperiod) is the main synchronizer of seasonal functions. The photoperiodic information is transmitted through the retino-hypothalamic tract to the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN), site of the master circadian clock. To investigate effects of day length change on the sheep SCN, we used in-situ hybridization to assess the daily temporal organization of expression of circadian clock genes (Per1, Per2, Bmal1 and Fbxl21) and neuropeptides (Vip, Grp and Avp) in animals acclimated to a short photoperiod (SP; 8h of light) and at 3 or 15 days following transfer to a long photoperiod (LP3, LP15, respectively; 16h of light), achieved by an acute 8-h delay of lights off. We found that waveforms of SCN gene expression conformed to those previously seen in LP acclimated animals within 3 days of transfer to LP. Mean levels of expression for Per1-2 and Fbxl21 were nearly 2-fold higher in the LP15 than in the SP group. The expression of Vip was arrhythmic and unaffected by photoperiod, while, in contrast to rodents, Grp expression was not detectable within the sheep SCN. Expression of the circadian output gene Avp cycled robustly in all photoperiod groups with no detectable change in phasing. Overall these data suggest that synchronizing effects of light on SCN circadian organisation proceed similarly in ungulates and in rodents, despite differences in neuropeptide gene expression
CO ice photodesorption: A wavelength-dependent study
UV-induced photodesorption of ice is a non-thermal evaporation process that
can explain the presence of cold molecular gas in a range of interstellar
regions. Information on the average UV photodesorption yield of astrophysically
important ices exists for broadband UV lamp experiments. UV fields around
low-mass pre-main sequence stars, around shocks and in many other astrophysical
environments are however often dominated by discrete atomic and molecular
emission lines. It is therefore crucial to consider the wavelength dependence
of photodesorption yields and mechanisms. In this work, for the first time, the
wavelength-dependent photodesorption of pure CO ice is explored between 90 and
170 nm. The experiments are performed under ultra high vacuum conditions using
tunable synchrotron radiation. Ice photodesorption is simultaneously probed by
infrared absorption spectroscopy in reflection mode of the ice and by
quadrupole mass spectrometry of the gas phase. The experimental results for CO
reveal a strong wavelength dependence directly linked to the vibronic
transition strengths of CO ice, implying that photodesorption is induced by
electronic transition (DIET). The observed dependence on the ice absorption
spectra implies relatively low photodesorption yields at 121.6 nm (Ly-alpha),
where CO barely absorbs, compared to the high yields found at wavelengths
coinciding with transitions into the first electronic state of CO (singulet Pi
at 150 nm); the CO photodesorption rates depend strongly on the UV profiles

On the "generalized Generalized Langevin Equation"
In molecular dynamics simulations and single molecule experiments,
observables are usually measured along dynamic trajectories and then averaged
over an ensemble ("bundle") of trajectories. Under stationary conditions, the
time-evolution of such averages is described by the generalized Langevin
equation. In contrast, if the dynamics is not stationary, it is not a priori
clear which form the equation of motion for an averaged observable has. We
employ the formalism of time-dependent projection operator techniques to derive
the equation of motion for a non-equilibrium trajectory-averaged observable as
well as for its non-stationary auto-correlation function. The equation is
similar in structure to the generalized Langevin equation, but exhibits a
time-dependent memory kernel as well as a fluctuating force that implicitly
depends on the initial conditions of the process. We also derive a relation
between this memory kernel and the autocorrelation function of the fluctuating
force that has a structure similar to a fluctuation-dissipation relation. In
addition, we show how the choice of the projection operator allows to relate
the Taylor expansion of the memory kernel to data that is accessible in MD
simulations and experiments, thus allowing to construct the equation of motion.
As a numerical example, the procedure is applied to Brownian motion initialized
in non-equilibrium conditions, and is shown to be consistent with direct
measurements from simulations
Comparison between Smoluchowski and Boltzmann approaches for self-propelled rods
International audienceConsidering systems of self-propelled polar particles with nematic interactions (" rods "), we compare the continuum equations describing the evolution of polar and nematic order parameters, derived either from Smoluchowski or Boltzmann equations. Our main goal is to understand the discrepancies between the continuum equations obtained so far in both frameworks. We first show that, in the simple case of point-like particles with only alignment interactions, the continuum equations obtained have the same structure in both cases. We further study, in the Smoluchowski framework, the case where an interaction force is added on top of the aligning torque. This clarifies the origin of the additional terms obtained in previous works. Our observations lead us to emphasize the need for a more involved closure scheme than the standard normal form of the distribution when dealing with active systems
The representation of vowel duration in Civili dictionaries

This article focuses on the representation of vowel duration in Civili dictionaries. The representation in these dictionaries is inconsistent. In the article, it is argued that this inconsistency stems from a twofold phonetic-phonological issue, which has implications for the word writing system of the language. The article provides an assessment of the existing orthography proposals for Civili and offers materials for a new proposal that takes the vowel duration issue into account. Subsequently, it is recommended that vowel duration be represented by a diaeresis above the vowel for both the orthography and the lemmatization in reference works such as dictionaries and school and religious textbooks.La représentation de la durée vocalique dans les dictionnaires du civili. Le civili est une langue en développement parlée au Gabon et dans quelques pays voisins. Cet article traite de la représentation de la durée vocalique dans les dictionnaires du civili. La représentation est inconsistante dans ces dictionnaires. Dans l'article, il est soutenu que cette in-consistance trouve son origine dans le double problème phonético-phonologique qui a une impli-cation dans le système d'écriture des mots de la langue. L'article fournit une évaluation des propo-sitions d'orthographe existantes pour le civili et présente des éléments pour une nouvelle proposi-tion qui prend en compte la question de la durée vocalique.
